Christianity and Its Distortions

There was a time when the followers of Jesus were known by their love, humility, forgiveness, and willingness to suffer for the truth. Today, too often, Christianity is recognized instead by division, denominational rivalry, political alliances, commercialized religion, endless arguments, and public scandals. The churches in this image resemble factories, not because every church is corrupt, but because whenever Christ is replaced by power, profit, pride, or ideology, the witness of the Church becomes polluted. The overflowing canal symbolizes the sins and failures of religious systems, while the crowds arguing along the roads remind us how easily we defend our traditions more passionately than we reflect the character of Christ. People from other faiths pass by holding their noses not because they have seen the true Christ, but because they have only encountered the unpleasant odor of our divisions and hypocrisy.

Yet the image does not end in despair. In the middle of the polluted water stands a single lotus radiant, pure, untouched by the filth around it. The lotus represents Jesus Christ. He remains holy, beautiful, compassionate, and worthy of our trust, even when His followers fail to reflect Him. My prayer is that people will not judge Christ by our failures but discover Him for themselves. The call of the Gospel is not from one religion to another, but from religiosity to a living relationship with Christ. May we stop merely defending Christianity and begin displaying Christ, so that the fragrance of His life is stronger than the odor of our failures.

"The greatest tragedy is not that Christ has lost His beauty, but that many have hidden His beauty behind the noise of religion."
